Wine information

A large part of the Blaufränkisch grapes for the Moric Reserve comes from Lutzmannsburg, the rest is distributed among the northern Burgenland communities of Zagersdorf and Sankt Georgen. It is the continuation of the Blaufränkisch with selections in the vineyards and their special characteristics in terms of age , location and soil. Only the best barrels from these vineyards find their way into the Reserve. The majority of the grapes grew on calcareous sediments - from sandy to extremely clayey consistencies to shell limestone and chalk soils - of the Pannonian Sea. Fermentation was spontaneous and lasted 21 to 28 days in open vats. This was followed by 24 months of ageing in 500 to 2,000 litre barrels. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration with small amounts of sulphites.

Nose

The 2019s Moric Reserve is a red wine that combines deep dark fruit notes with earthy and stony aromas. It is reminiscent of blackberries, sloes and cherries, cranberries and pomegranates, a little black olive tapenade, roasted herbs, undergrowth with damp forest floor and autumn leaves, and crushed stone.

Palate

Roland Velichs Reserve is a wine for now and the next ten years - minimum. The juiciness of this wine, the elegant acidity and the pithy tannin structure are already great fun today, but even more so when you pour it into a carafe, where it draws proper air and becomes even more balanced. It is a wine whose dark fruit mixes with fermented notes of olives, cardamom, tobacco and some Kampot pepper. The key here is the interplay of the crisp and juicy fruit with the tannin, which clearly shapes the wine. The tannin, the lively acidity and the fruit, which dispenses entirely with sweetness, make the Reserve a very serious wine that, despite its earthiness, seems playful like a young earth spirit.
