Wine Description for Manila Weiss 2022 by Nittnaus Anita & Hans

Colour & Appearance
Golden-shimmering straw yellow with delicate orange reflections – a first hint of skin contact and unconventional vinification.
Nose
Wild yet harmonious, this wine presents itself: kaffir lime leaves, bergamot and intense citrus zest dominate initially. Behind these unfold ripe pear, quince compote and the tart spice of yellow apple skins. Nettle and wild herbs lend an ethereal note, supported by marjoram and tarragon. As the temperature rises, mirabelle and peach come to the fore, before artichoke and fennel round out the aromatic spectrum with their vegetal presence.
Palate
The Manila 2022 surprises with impressive balance: lean, taut and focused. The fruit finds its place at the core, yet is held in precise channels. Martin Nittnaus achieves the feat here of taming a wild character to make it everyday-friendly. A dark, balsamic spice distinctly marks the finish without disrupting the remarkable drinkability. At a moderate 11.5% alcohol, it comes across as uncomplicated yet demanding.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A „wild tangle“ of 55% Grüner Veltliner, 23% Welschriesling and 22% Weißburgunder. The Veltliner is foot-trodden and macerated as whole bunches for five days on the skins in stainless steel. The Welschriesling ferments destemmed in steel, the Weißburgunder in 1500-litre wooden barrels. The final cuvée matures in stainless steel until bottling – unfiltered and unfined. The hot, dry 2022 vintage with weak winter rainfall resulted in small, concentrated berries.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The vegetal spice makes it ideal for cured whitefish with yellow beetroot, artichoke hearts with yoghurt-cumin dip or roasted fennel with orange fillets and Kalamata olives. Generally an ideal companion to fennel, artichoke and citrus dishes.
Special Features
A subversive statement from the Nittnaus family: native varieties sent on an adventure. The name Manila stands for this liberation from conventional patterns – a contemporary, light-footed natural wine with character and drinking pleasure.
