Wine Description for Grüner Veltliner Riede Steiner Schreck „Dritter Akt“ Unfiltered 2018 by HM Lang
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium straw yellow, unfiltered and thus with natural cloudiness – an honest wine without cosmetic intervention.
- Nose
- Initially restrained, positively shy, yet with air a remarkable complexity unfolds: lanolin and lemon curd meet blackcurrant, crisp apple and mirabelle plums. Herbal notes run through the bouquet – this is no expressive Veltliner, but a highly refined, self-contained wine that deserves patience and large glasses.
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium straw yellow, unfiltered with natural cloudiness – a sign of uncompromising authenticity.
- Nose
- Initially restrained, almost shy, this Grüner Veltliner unfolds only with air. Lanolin and lemon curd meet blackcurrant, crisp apple and mirabelle plums. Subtle herbal notes complete the elegant, restrained aromatic profile – a wine that deserves time and large glasses.
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium straw yellow, unfiltered with natural brilliance.
- Nose
- Initially restrained, then highly refined and multi-layered: lanolin meets lemon curd, blackcurrant and crisp apple. To this are added mirabelle plums and a subtle herbal spice. A wine that needs time in the glass – decanting recommended.
- Palate
- Here the true nature of this extraordinary Veltliner unfolds: vibrating energy, carried by an unusually taut acidity backbone for the variety. Ginger, turmeric and white pepper form a spicy framework, whilst a chalky, almost limestone texture gives the wine substance. With only 11.5% alcohol, this displays an electrifying precision that recalls great Chablis or Sancerre rather than classic Austrian Veltliner. The energy is palpable, the acidity pressure unusually present for the variety.
- Finish
- Long, saline, marked by vibrating minerality. The chalky texture remains present, accompanied by herbal spice and remarkable elegance.
- Terroir & Origin
- Riede Steiner Schreck in Krems, an extremely steep vineyard site at 320 metres elevation with narrow terraces. The subsoil of Gföhler gneiss and granite shapes the character of this extraordinary wine. 100-year-old vines, farmed under Demeter certification.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Grüner Veltliner from hundred-year-old vines. Extremely early harvest on 22 August, only 65 days after flowering – a record. Two-day, ultra-slow pressing, spontaneous fermentation with 3-5% whole bunches for intercellular fermentation. Two years ageing on full lees in large Stockinger wooden barrel at constant 9°C, unfiltered bottling. Minimally sulphited. Biodynamically (Demeter) farmed, 100-year-old vines.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- This structured, saline Veltliner demands precise cuisine: asparagus rösti with fried egg, cured black cod with creamy potato purée or halibut with chamomile beurre blanc and mirabelle plum compote. The chalky minerality harmonises beautifully with seafood and delicate fish.
- Special Features
- Radical harvest only 65 days after flowering – earlier than ever before – at physiological ripeness and pH 3.0. Hundred-year-old vines, Demeter-certified. Two years ageing on full lees, unfiltered bottling. An uncompromising, purist Grüner Veltliner that deserves patience and large glasses.
