Nose
The first impression is dense and dark. Without frills, the 2017 Gotes del Montsant clearly shows its Mediterranean origin. A whole cornucopia of dark berries and fruits pours into the glass. Blackberries, black cherries, plums, cassis and elderberry. Discreet ethereal notes remind of eucalyptus, sage and rosemary. Roasted nuts are also found in delicate hints. Black olive as well as a little fennel round off the nose vegetal. Overall, this Catalan smells wonderfully inviting and intensely fruity. In the background a dark, mystical component sounds again and again. Extremely exciting and promising.
Palate
The cuvée of Cariñena and Garnacha promises on the palate what was to be expected after the first sensory impressions. The rich, dark fruit hits the palate loudly. It is nicely juicy with a fine acid structure. Equipped with decent drinkability, it comes across as unusually lean and straightforward from the hot climate. Please do not misunderstand. The Gotes del Montsant is anything but a lightweight, but the fruit is cool and it seems very silky.
