Info
In the VDP. Große Lage Schlossberg in Achkarren is home to Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The centrepiece of the site is protected from the wind and extremely steep. The warmth of the water is an important characteristic of this historic site.
Fritz Keller heard about the uprooting of the old vines in this location at the time. He immediately wanted to protect the genetics. Although the owners at the time had no successor, the rule was. "Achkarrers do not sell to Oberbergener"! The ancient vines could only be saved after Fritz Keller was able to prove that he had a grandmother from Achkarren.
Since 2009, the old vines in the centrepiece have been joined by a plot of black volcanic soil and a dry stone wall up to 4 metres high. This preserved piece of cultural heritage stretches over a length of 150 metres. Sélection Massale has ensured the future of this ancient vine material.
The wine is matured for 12 months in large wooden barrels, which of course do not have to be new. After this initial maturation, the wine spends a further six months on the lees in steel tanks. That's how Pinot Gris works - too!
Color
Intensely bright golden yellow with delicate green reflections
Nose
The Pinot Gris Grosses Gewächs from the Schlossberg vineyard in Achkarren has a wonderfully tantalising aroma. The 2021 example is convincing, independent and far removed from insignificant opulence and overflowing breadth. It smells delicately of apple blossom and tangerine skin. This Pinot Gris oscillates between a subtle note of walnut and hazelnut. Ripe, juicy pear and green apple linger in the background. Its floral character now expands to almond blossom, with shy hints of coriander and fennel in the background. A little marjoram and sage add freshness. A subtle smoky nuance paired with a yeasty component only slowly becomes perceptible.
Palate
Is this the incarnation of Pinot Gris? Filigree, cool and juicy, it flows over the lips. Everything seems in harmony and the balance is perfect! Despite the cool vintage, it has enough fruit and pressure to stand up to its compact acidity structure, which marches briskly forwards. It is compact and dense. Never boring. It lives from bitter substances, acidity peaks and fruity accents. Its delicate mellowness is almost drowned out by the other, louder attributes. Yet it is so important as a link. It has an astringent and glue-like effect. Yes, even a Pinot Gris can cause this. With length and vigour, it lingers on the palate for minutes.
