Visualisation
On examining it, the 2014 Riesling Clos Saint Urban Rangen de Thann shines in a deep, rich golden hue, streaked with delicate copper rays.
Aroma
Initially, a powerful, dense aroma is perceived, which needs time and space to fully develop. In a decanter, paired with plenty of fresh air, the wine finally reveals its complex, luxurious essence. Beguilingly clear notes of apricot, orange and orange marmalade combine harmoniously with the scent of sweet, blossoming flowers and honey. Contrasting with this are tart and spicy undertones of tree bark, yarrow and dark, damp earth. A deep, cool minerality hovers over everything, combined with typical smoky accents. A truly multi-faceted work of art, even just by sniffing it.
Taste
On the palate, the wine astounds with a veritable explosion of fruit, mainly yellow fruits, combined with a stirring salty minerality and accurate acidity. It is a wine that captivates and never lets go: powerful, complex and amazing. But it is more a wine for the long haul, best tucked away in the cellar waiting for the perfect moment that feels like setting off fireworks.
Recommendation
For those who want to taste it early, it is recommended to decant the wine for several hours and serve it in a sufficiently large glass. Several days after opening, this Riesling gains additional expression.
Alternative food recommendations
This wine would be a great match for dishes such as grilled tuna steak with herb gnocchi, a chicken in puff pastry with morel sauce and parsnip vegetables, or a brie tart with truffles and mixed wild mushrooms.
