Wine profile:
The Clos-Saint-Urbain on the Grand Cru Rangen, acquired in 1977, is a blend of old and younger vines, all carefully tended by hand. Over the years, hard work and precision has been required to bring out the best fruit from these vines. The vineyard shows a remarkable volcanic geology that is unique in Alsace and brings out the originality of the wines. Both generations of vines are treated equally, with the newer plantings tending to produce healthier grapes, perfect for making a dry wine.

Findings on production:
Compared to the older vines, the harvest of the younger plantings is larger but still relatively small in yield. These smaller quantities contribute to the speed of fermentation, which allows for low residual sweetness in the 2019 wine.

Visual aspect:
This wine shows a deep golden yellow, highlighted by fine copper reflections.

Fragrance profile:
The 2019 Pinot Gris unfolds wonderful smoky and flinty aromas that are beautifully accentuated by charming notes of ripe oranges, marmalade, mango chutney and citrus fruits. Sweet oriental spices such as cardamom, curry, candied ginger and liquorice complement the rich bouquet and offer a real feast for the nose.

Palate profile:
This wine skims the tongue with a fantastic fullness, accompanied by a slightly provocative spiciness. The subtle sweetness harmonises well with the smoky notes and fine tannins. A long finish is encouraged by a refreshing and lively acidity.

Food recommendation:
For optimal tasting, unfold the wine best in a large glass and serve it as an elegant food companion. So try herbed oyster carpaccio with black pepper and nut oil, monkfish in a vanilla mustard sauce with new potatoes or crispy dumplings filled with duck confit, savoy cabbage and slightly spicy kimchi.
