Color
Dark purple with garnet rims, the wine is clear and bright in the glass.
Nose
Facing each other, standing for the same thing and yet fundamentally different, flavours meet as if one were going from the pâtisserie to the post of the saucier in a Piedmontese high cuisine....
Preserved fruits and mush of figs, dates and plums meet the flavours of a rum pot, as well as those of stomach bread, dark dark chocolate and marzipan potatoes.
At the same time, however, a scent rises that reminds of barbecue charcoal; of marinades of olive oil, honey and mustard with black pepper, rosemary and chili peppers. Spice and fruit meet guilelessly and are out for persistent endurance.
Palate
The 2015 Barolo Castiglione from Vietti is softer on the palate than the discreetly boisterous aroma of Nebbiolo would suggest. With sublime power and urgency, the mouth space is kindly taken over and spread out with dark berry fruit. Edgy, yet ripe tannins give relentless persistence, held in tense balance by playful acidity.
