Discover our pearl of a wine:
His vines have been growing and thriving on the steep, terraced slopes of the renowned Scarrone vineyard since 1918. There they have an ideal east-northeast exposure, directly below our winery in Castiglione Falletto. The planting density is about 4,300 vines per hectare, on a nutrient-rich limestone marl soil. The result of the amazingly low yields of these old vines is an intensely concentrated wine of natural quality.
The care and harvesting process is equally remarkable: hand-harvested on 21 September 2020, gently destemmed and cold-crushed in open stainless steel vats for two days. The alcoholic fermentation process lasts about two weeks, with regular pumping over and stirring of the pomace to ensure perfect extraction of colour and tannins. After the malolactic fermentation in small oak barrels, the wines are aged for about 18 months, mainly in barriques, and partly in large oak barrels. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
The colour shines in a rich violet-red and is dense and engaging all the way to the rim.
The nose is caressed by enticing aromas: the 2020 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Veccia Scarrone enchants with a seductive blend of sour cherries, wild raspberries and fiery blueberries. Floral nuances of rose petals, elderflowers and violets flirt with spicy notes of cinnamon, clove and vanilla, never intrusive, always finely balanced.
On the palate, this Barbera delights with its juicy fruitiness, pleasant sweetness and tangy acidity. Mineral, salty notes paired with softly polished tannins make the mouth water and immediately awaken the desire for a second glass. Despite its remarkably balanced alcohol content, this Italian classic is incredibly approachable. An enjoyable wine with excellent ageing potential!
Such a wine should be accompanied by matching dishes: try a spinach frittata with fresh basil cream. Or a hearty tuna steak garnished with beetroot, olives and sun-ripened tomatoes. Wide ribbon noodles with radicchio and a salsiccia red wine sauce also make a harmonious combination. This listing certainly gives a first impression of what this exceptional wine can awaken in its connoisseurs.
