Wine Description for Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 by Trapet Père & Fils

Character
The Chambertin from Trapet Père & Fils embodies Burgundian wine culture in its purest form. The estate, in family hands for generations and biodynamically managed, ranks among the most respected producers in Gevrey-Chambertin. Jean-Louis Trapet has transformed the domaine into a pioneer of sustainable viticulture without sacrificing classical elegance. The 2020 vintage benefited from ideal conditions – a warm, dry summer with cool nights that produced concentrated yet balanced wines.
Terroir & Origin
Chambertin has been regarded for centuries as one of Burgundy’s most prestigious Grand Crus. The vineyard site above Gevrey-Chambertin at approximately 275 metres elevation combines ideal conditions: calcareous marl soil with pebbles, perfect south-east exposure and a microclimate that unites finesse with structure. Trapet manages around 1.9 hectares here in the finest mid-slope position – parcels that have been in family ownership since 1919. The biodynamic approach with minimal intervention allows the terroir to speak unadulterated.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir finds its most complex expression here. Trapet vinifies traditionally with a high proportion of whole bunches, extended maceration periods and restrained use of new oak barrels – typically 30 to 40 per cent. The moderate alcohol content of 13% reflects the house philosophy: elegance before opulence, precision before power. The wines mature for 18 months in barrel and develop their characteristic combination of floral finesse, earthy depth and silky texture.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre demands thoughtful accompaniment: game birds such as pheasant or pigeon, Coq au Vin from Burgundy, venison loin with mushrooms or aged Époisses cheese. The structure and depth harmonise beautifully with truffle dishes or a classic Bœuf Bourguignon.
