Pecorino

Pecorino – the name is confusing, because one inevitably thinks of the cheese. Yet the grape variety from Abruzzo has little to do with sheep’s cheese, except that sheep used to graze between the vines. The grape was almost extinct for a long time, until a few winemakers rediscovered it in the 1980s. Today, Pecorino is one of the most interesting white grape varieties in central Italy: complex, with substance, but without the heaviness of some Verdicchio.

In our range, Cirelli from Atri shows what the grape is capable of. Francesco Cirelli vinifies his Pecorino wines naturally, often in amphorae, which gives the grape an additional texture. Emidio Pepe, a legend of the region, also works with Pecorino. The grape has its own character – spicy, with citrus and white flowers, but always with a mineral backbone.
