Wine Description for Meursault „Sous la Velle“ AOC 2022 by Rougeot Père & Fils

Character
A classic Meursault from the „Sous la Velle“ vineyard site, bearing the Burgundian hallmark of Rougeot Père & Fils. These family winemakers from the heart of the Côte de Beaune understand how to unite the characteristic minerality and creamy texture for which Meursault is world-renowned. At 13% alcohol, the wine displays balance and precision – an example of the elegance that the 2022 vintage was able to produce despite climatic challenges.
Terroir & Origin
The Sous la Velle vineyard site lies at the southern end of the Meursault appellation, in immediate proximity to Puligny-Montrachet. The calcareous soils with their high proportion of marl lend the wines that stony precision which distinguishes Meursault from other white wine villages of Burgundy. The continental climate with cool nights and warm days enables slow ripening of the Chardonnay grapes, resulting in complex aromas and vibrant acidity. The 2022 vintage was characterised by dryness and heat, yet experienced winemakers such as the Rougeot family knew how to preserve freshness through selective harvesting and precise timing.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Chardonnay finds its noblest expression in Burgundy. In Meursault, wines of particular richness and texture are created without losing finesse. The Rougeot family tends their vines according to traditional methods and vinifies with respect for the terroir. Typically, ageing takes place in French oak barrels, with the proportion of new wood kept moderate so as not to mask the fruit and minerality. Malolactic fermentation lends the wine that buttery smoothness which makes Meursault so distinctive.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A versatile companion to seafood, particularly scallops or lobster in butter sauce. Excellent with poultry in cream sauce, veal cutlets or a classic Coq au Vin Blanc. Also an excellent choice with aged cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort. The texture of the wine harmonises beautifully with risotto or pasta with truffle.
