Wine Description for Poggio al Vento Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2019 by Col d’Orcia

Character
The Poggio al Vento Riserva represents the pinnacle of Brunello production at Col d’Orcia. As a Riserva, this wine undergoes extended maturation of at least six years, two of which in wood, which imparts exceptional complexity and depth. The name „Poggio al Vento“ – hill in the wind – refers to the exposed vineyard site that gives this wine its distinctive character. With 14.5% alcohol, it displays the concentration and ripeness of the 2019 vintage, which is considered excellent in Tuscany.
Terroir & Origin
Col d’Orcia has cultivated vineyards on the southern slopes of Montalcino since 1973, where calcareous soils and maritime influences from the nearby Monte Amiata shape the terroir. The Poggio al Vento vineyard site benefits from constant winds that provide natural ventilation and ensure healthy grapes. The Mediterranean microclimate with warm days and cool nights enables slow, even ripening of the Sangiovese grapes, which here achieve their noblest expression as Sangiovese Grosso.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Sangiovese, the great Tuscan grape variety, reaches its highest expression in Montalcino. The Riserva classification demands strict selection of the finest grapes and extended barrel ageing in large oak casks, traditionally Slavonian oak. Col d’Orcia combines traditional methods with modern viticulture, creating Brunellos renowned for their elegance and ageing potential. The 2019 vintage promises outstanding structure alongside fruit clarity.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This powerful Brunello calls for equally substantial dishes: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù, braised beef roulades or aged Pecorino Toscano. It also shows its class with truffle dishes and mushroom risotto made with porcini. The tannins and acidity structure make it the ideal companion to rich, hearty meat dishes of Tuscan cuisine.
