Info about the situation

The monopollage of 1 ha is located near the Grand Cru Hengst; it is the only Clos in Alsace planted with 100 % Pinot Noir. It is divided into three sections. The upper part is composed of rosy Vosges sandstone, red sandstone and calcareous sandstone. In the middle, there is grey shell limestone with a very fine grain and yellow Jura rock. In the lower part, there is a mixture of Vosges sandstone and white and pink quartz. The vines were planted between 1998 and 2002. The yields here are only 35 hl/ha.

Expansion

The grapes were transformed into wine more on the principle of infusion than extraction. Fermentation was spontaneous in tank with 15 % whole grapes, then 17 months in barrique . Malolactic acid reduction in spring, no fining.

Color

Muted violet red with purple reflections.

Nose

The 2019 Pinot Noir Clos de la Faille is open at the current stage with seductive, berry and delicately sweet aromatics accompanied by a distinct note of wild herbs. Leather, truffle, cedar and wood smoke are also present. It is very beguiling at the moment, an ethereal note and its floral scent are omnipresent and already enchant in the fragrance in a wonderful way.

Palate

On the palate, it appears juicy, full of fruit, and a fine fruit sweetness appears here as well, although this is an entirely dry wine. Once again, the Clos del la Faille combines power with an incredibly feminine and elegant impression. Salty minerality and a nevertheless firm tannin structure point to its excellent ageing and storage potential. Even if it already shows itself openly, one does well to give it still some time to show itself in full beauty.

If you want to enjoy it in its youthful stage, you should pour it slightly chilled from the decanter into Burgundy glasses.
