Info about the situation

The monopollage of 1 ha is located near the Grand Cru Hengst, it is the only Clos in Alsace planted with 100 % Pinot Noir.
It is divided into three sections. The upper part consists of pink Vosges sandstone, mottled sandstone and calcareous sandstone. In the middle, there is grey shell limestone with a very fine grain and yellow Jura rock, and in the lower part, a mixture of Vosges sandstone and white and pink quartz. The vines were planted between 1998 and 2002.

Expansion

The grapes were transformed into wine more on the principle of infusion than extraction. Fermentation was spontaneous in tank with 30 % whole clusters, then 17 months in barrique (10 % new, 50 % one year old and 40 % two year old occupancy). Malolactic acid reduction in spring, no fining.

Color

Muted violet red with purple reflections.

Nose

The 2018 Pinot Noir "Clos de la Faille" shows an intense, earthy and original aroma. At first, the scent of leather, truffle, cigar, forest leaves, cedar wood, wood smoke and noble dark chocolate emerges from the glass. After a longer opening, fruity aromas of blackberries, dark cherries and plums join in, rounded off by fine spices like cinnamon, juniper and freshly ground white pepper. Clear freshness is given by the distinctive herbal note of thyme and wild mint, an extremely multifaceted fragrance.

Palate

On the palate, it appears elegant and juicy. Its stimulating Pinot acidity is carried by an intense minerality and is wonderfully embedded in the seductive and sweetish fruit. It appears very feminine and powerful at the same time, has great length on the palate and a fruity structure that flirts with the tongue.
