Wine Description for Pinot Gris Altenbourg Le Tri Sélection de Grains Nobles 2008 375ml from Domaine Albert Mann

Character
A Sélection de Grains Nobles from the Grand Cru Altenbourg – this represents the highest art of sweet wine-making in Alsace. Domaine Albert Mann, rooted in biodynamic viticulture for generations, creates here a wine of rare concentration and elegance. The low alcohol content of just 9% and the opulent residual sweetness bear witness to noble-rotted berries, selected berry by berry. The 2008 vintage, cool and late, offered ideal conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea and thus for wines of extraordinary finesse and longevity.
Terroir & Origin
The Grand Cru Altenbourg lies south of Colmar on calcareous marl soils with high clay and limestone content. This geological particularity imparts a distinctive minerality and structure to the wines, which provides balance even at the highest levels of sweetness. Domaine Albert Mann has managed its parcels according to biodynamic principles since 1998, which is reflected in the precision and vibrancy of the wines. The hillside location and the continental climate of Alsace with its warm summers and dry autumns create optimal conditions for the slow concentration of noble-rotted grapes.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Gris displays its most opulent side in Alsace – full-bodied, aromatically complex, with a natural inclination towards ripeness and richness. For a SGN, exclusively berries affected by noble rot are harvested in several passes, often extending into November. The concentration of sugar, acidity and aromatic compounds is extreme, yields minimal. Fermentation stops naturally when the alcohol inhibits the yeasts, which explains the characteristic balance between sweetness and moderate alcohol. The result: a wine of impressive complexity that can age for decades.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A meditative tasting experience that shines as a dessert wine or is classically served with foie gras. Harmonises beautifully with blue cheese such as Roquefort, fruity desserts with apricots or peaches, and Tarte Tatin. Also an exciting combination with Asian cuisine featuring sweet and sour elements. Best enjoyed lightly chilled at 10-12°C.
