Inspired by its historic origin of the old Cistercian convent of Gottesthal, this wine illustrates the intense chalkiness and iron-rich concentration of its soil. The admirable character of this unique soil includes elements of loess, clay marl and quartzite. This original "beach", laid millions of years ago at an altitude of 160 metres, is positioned in gently sloping plots of 15 to 20 percent slope to the south-south-west.

The viticulture is characterised by manual labour and careful whole bunch pressing. A spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts is the secret of its authenticity before it matures for 16 months on the full lees in large wooden barrels.

In colour, it radiates a lively and light golden glow, embellished by green reflections. The 2021 Oestricher Klosterberg Riesling Erste Lage remains graceful, but at the same time still quite restrained. Limey, cool nuances combine with a symphony of aromas: grapefruit zest, lime, green apple, bergamot and lemon zest.

On the tongue, it is well-proportioned, delicate and yet exciting. Its elegance is accompanied by a fine saltiness and a lively acidity. The renewed fine tart grapefruit notes and a balanced spiciness give it personality and a remarkably invigorating structure. The wine is an excellent companion for many dishes and has fantastic ageing potential. For those who wish to taste it in its youthful phase, it would be advisable to aerate it a few hours beforehand.

As an alternative to the food recommendations, enjoy this wine with a mixed salad of chickpeas, courgettes, dates and goat's cheese. Try it also with roasted pork tenderloin with jacket potatoes and a delicate honey-thyme glaze or with roasted perch fillet accompanied by risotto and a Riesling nettle butter sauce.
