Wine Description for Riesling Oestricher Klosterberg 1G Erste Lage 2021 by Peter Jakob Kühn
- Colour & Appearance
- Sparkling, pale golden yellow with vibrant green reflections – a wine that promises freshness and tension from the very first glance.
- Nose
- Still youthfully closed, yet of fascinating grace. Chalky minerality dominates, cool and precise, underpinned by grapefruit peel, lime, green apple and bergamot. A hint of lemon zest rounds off the aromatic profile – this is classic Rheingau Riesling with substance.
- Palate
- Delicate, yet by no means restrained. The wine glides across the palate with elegant precision, carried by delicately saline minerality and invigorating acidity. The finely off-dry grapefruit notes return, accompanied by a stimulating spiciness that lends the wine structure and character. Provocative in the best sense – a Riesling that demands and deserves attention.
- Finish
- Long, cool and with persistent minerality. The acidity carries far without being dominant, leaving behind a refreshing, slightly saline aftertaste.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Oestricher Klosterberg, once belonging to the Cistercian convent Gottesthal, lies at approximately 160 metres elevation with moderately steep south-southwest exposure. The soil – calcareous loess with iron oxide, clay marl and quartzite – is a relic of a primordial riverbank and imparts the wine with its characteristic minerality and complexity.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling, hand-harvested and gently pressed as whole bunches. Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, followed by 16 months ageing on full lees in large wooden casks – a patient, respectful approach to the harvest that manifests itself in depth and texture.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- An excellent food companion: zander fillet pan-fried on the skin with nettle-Riesling butter sauce, pork fillet with honey glaze and roasted carrots, or salad with chickpeas, aubergine, fig and feta. The wine’s acidity and minerality harmonise perfectly with fish, light meat and vegetarian dishes with spicy components.
- Special Characteristics
- This wine possesses fantastic ageing potential. Those wishing to enjoy it young should allow it a few hours of air contact in a decanter. With further years in bottle, it will gain in complexity and harmony – a Riesling for both the patient and the connoisseur alike.
