Information about wine

The Sea Spider was extracted from the Gimmeldingen almond orchard. The name is that of an old vineyard that produces better wines than the rest of the almond orchard, which is why the Sea Spider as large growth is declared and the rest of the almond orchard as First layer. The Meerspinne site has a limestone and red sandstone marl topsoil on a massive limestone subsoil. The Riesling was harvested botrytis-free in November. It stood on the skins for up to six hours, was fermented spontaneously and, like all Christmann's GGs fermented down to about two grams of residual sugar and aged in large double barrels and stainless steel.

intense straw yellow

Over the last two years, it has become increasingly apparent that the Great Growths by A. Christmann become more and more puristic and cool in their impression. This is not least true for the "Mersbin", as the vineyard was called in 1456. In its early stages, this Riesling seems a bit airier than the Königsbacher Idig, but hardly more closed. It is a cool beauty that smells of a touch of wood and pineapple, but above all Meyer lemons, green apple, lemon verbena and stone.

Despite this cool restraint, and perhaps because of it - is this the right Riesling for a film with Cate Blanchett? - the Sea Spider already irritatingly inviting. That's because of the 2018 acidity, of course, which presents an almost ideal combination of ripeness and vibrancy that can't be described as anything other than sexy. But it's also because the Great Growth is somewhat more yellow-fruited on the palate than the nose would suggest. The wine seems downright juicy, the slight saltiness does the rest, and on the palate the full power of this Riesling becomes obvious. Power, minerality and vitality, a striking acid bite and a light tannic texture characterize this wine.
