Info

2022 is the second example of this wine.

It serves as a contrasting programme to the Chardonnay image that stubbornly persists in the minds of many consumers. Instead of power, wood and fat, Steffen Mugler wants to show lightness, freshness and low alcohol.

The inspiration fluctuates between sparkling base wines and classic Kabinett dry wines.

After the harvest, the Chardonnay matures for a year in large barrels without the addition of sulphur. It is deliberately bottled without filtration to give the wine some substance but also complexity and stability on its journey.

Nose

2022 Chardonnay Reserve from Mugler smells wonderfully yeasty and inviting. Crème slices with peach and covered apple pie are fragrant and warming. The stone and pome fruit is used very discreetly and is not intended to be kitschy. A serious yellow to orange fruit floats in the air. The yeasty notes of fine patisserie provide depth and complexity. A hint of roasted almonds alongside a delicate herbal freshness add another dimension. Sage and lemon balm are particularly noteworthy here. Some salt stone and wet chalk complement all of this splendidly.

Palate

On the palate, it is juicy and powerful at the same time. Its astringent acidity structure repeatedly interrupts the fruit. This also makes the yeasty, melting attributes more attractive. The fruit is subtly emphasised. It now appears much more floral and tart. Its compact mouthfeel drives it on for minutes. It does not convey a feeling of heaviness. Quite the opposite. It literally floats in the room and creates a great drinking mood.
