Wine Description for Leinhöhle -N- 2021 by Michael Andres
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous lemon yellow with bright, clear reflections – a wine that wears its unfiltered nature with pride.
- Nose
- This Riesling shatters every convention. Instead of the expected petrol notes, it surprises with rooibos and rosehip, flanked by white currant and mirabelle plum. Floral accents of Douglas fir and acacia lend elegance. With air, yellow stone fruits develop, whilst dark slate, cold smoke and green pepper create a fascinating mineral-spicy depth.
- Palate
- Dense, spicy, electrifying. The yellow-fruited texture is threaded through with a refreshing acidity that keeps the wine juicy and tense. Surprisingly present: vegetable notes that interweave with the fruit into a complex whole. The straightforward structure carries the unconventional aromatics effortlessly.
- Finish
- Long and ethereal. Juniper, fennel seed and fresh coriander leave a resonance that will challenge every Riesling purist – and that is precisely the intention.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Leinhöhle in Deidesheim, a warm south-facing slope at the village boundary, provides the foundation for this radical Riesling. The vineyard site brings ripeness and concentration, whilst the chalky terroir contributes the mineral spice.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Riesling in its wildest form: spontaneously fermented in tonneau, with complete malolactic fermentation. Until June 2022, the wine aged on full lees – maximum yeast autolysis aromas included. Unfiltered, only minimally sulphited at bottling. The N-Series stands for Natural, No filtration, No Limits and Next Level – and this wine lives up to its name in every way.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Confit char with fennel-apple salad, warm artichoke hearts with green olive tapenade or wild boar carpaccio with radicchio and honey-mustard dressing – this wine demands dishes that mirror its complexity.
- Special Features
- A wine for adventurers, not traditionalists. Michael Andres uses the N-Series as a creative laboratory, and this 2021 vintage is a brilliant experiment in Riesling deconstruction. Those willing to let go of their expectations will be rewarded with one of the most exciting German white wines of recent years.
