Wine Description for Le Mont Moelleux 2018 by Huet
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium golden yellow with brilliant clarity – a wine that hints at its maturity without denying its youthfulness.
- Nose
- Lively and powerful, this 2018 presents itself with a bouquet of quince, pear and apple, accompanied by honeydew melon. The aromatics are ripe, yet by no means heavy – rather invigorating and delicate with remarkable depth. A feminine, captivating Chenin Blanc that still appears youthfully closed and absolutely needs air.
- Palate
- The opening surprises with creamy fruit and subtle sweetness, immediately countered by fine salinity and invigorating, citric acidity. The texture is dance-like, almost weightless. With air contact, notes of candied ginger, cinnamon and subtle clove develop. The balance between sweetness and acidity is masterful – you drink and drink, yet must remind yourself: this wine is only at the beginning of its journey.
- Finish
- Long, mineral and characterised by herbaceous freshness. The acidity carries far without ever becoming aggressive – a sign of considerable ageing potential.
- Terroir & Origin
- Le Mont lies above the legendary tuffeau caves of Huet on the first Vouvray plateau with south-facing exposure. The nine hectares of siliceous flint over deep green clay belong to the most prestigious vineyard sites of the appellation. This terroir lends the Chenin Blanc extraordinary intensity, minerality and refined structure.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Chenin Blanc from biodynamic viticulture. The Moelleux style with four out of five sweetness levels showcases the noble sweet side of the Loire without ever becoming cumbersome. Decant by all means and serve not too cold from large Burgundy glasses.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Poultry soup with coconut milk, Thai basil, kaffir limes and galangal – the exotic aromas harmonise perfectly with the wine’s fruit-spice complexity. Fried sea bream with lemon and basil plays wonderfully with the wine’s salinity. As dessert: Tarte Tatin with marzipan and apricots, lightly salted.
- Special Features
- A wine with considerable ageing potential of 15-20 years. Domaine Huet is one of the Loire’s icons and a pioneer in biodynamic winemaking. The 2018 Le Mont impressively demonstrates why Vouvray ranks among the world’s longest-lived white wines.
