Wine Description for Le Mont Moelleux 2015 by Huet
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous golden yellow with rich depth – a wine that already promises in the glass what it delivers on the palate.
- Nose
- An enigmatic, introspective wine. The 2015 Le Mont Moelleux does not open immediately, but demands patience and attention. Smoky spice dominates – a flash of flint, accompanied by smoked hay and the cool aroma of damp tufa stone. Beneath shimmer oriental spices: ginger, saffron, a trace of mustard powder. Only on the second nosing do exotic fruits emerge – pineapple, mango – like a sunbeam breaking through heavy cloud.
- Palate
- Impressively multi-layered and vibrant. The wine transforms from minute to minute in the glass, yet remains unmistakably itself. Apricot, greengage, kumquat and mango provide fruit richness, but the true greatness lies elsewhere: in the dense, almost tangible extract, in the vibrant minerality of silex and tufa stone, and in an acidity that effortlessly balances the considerable residual sweetness. Bitter citrus notes set a refreshing, almost electrifying counterpoint.
- Finish
- Long, precise, relentless. The mineral acidity carries the wine far into the finish, accompanied by an echo of quince and saffron. A finale that does not end – it simply fades slowly, like the last light of a long summer’s day.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Le Mont is one of three legendary vineyard sites of the Huet estate in Vouvray on the Loire. The soils of silex and tufa stone characterise this wine with unmistakable minerality and geological depth – unmistakable in the glass.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Chenin Blanc – the great white grape variety of the Loire, which finds its most complex expression in Vouvray. Produced as a Moelleux with noble residual sweetness, the 2015 offers ageing potential of forty years and beyond. A wine for generations.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- The spicy depth and vibrant acidity make this wine an extraordinary table companion. Ideal with sole with crispy parsley in beurre blanc, with langoustine in sesame crust with ginger butter or – surprisingly and convincingly – with the vegetarian date tajine with basmati, ginger and cardamom.
- Special Features
- Huet is regarded as the reference estate of Vouvray par excellence. The Le Mont Moelleux 2015 is not an agreeable wine – it is a serious, almost austere wine that demands patience and rewards with extraordinary complexity. To drink it now would be to awaken it too soon.
