Wine Description for Le Haut-Lieu demi-sec 2017 by Huet

Colour & Appearance
Medium straw yellow, clear and luminous in the glass – a visual promise of freshness and elegance.
Nose
A remarkably airy, almost dancing aromatics that defies every expectation of an off-dry wine. Nashi pear and the succulent flesh of yellow apples dominate, accompanied by delicate acacia blossoms, orange blossoms and a hint of honey. Despite the hinted sweetness, the bouquet remains weightlessly ethereal, never heavy or intrusive – a paradox that reveals Huet’s mastery.
Palate
Here the true artistry emerges: The 18 grams of residual sugar is so perfectly cushioned by a brilliant acidity structure that the wine, despite 13.5% alcohol, glides almost weightlessly across the tongue. This balance recalls a great German Kabinett – a reference one rarely dares make with Loire Chenin, yet here it is absolutely justified. Juicy, creamy and simultaneously threaded through with finely chiselled acidity, a fresh minerality reveals itself, never pushing to the fore but discreetly supporting the overall composition. A wine that is dangerously easy to drink and threatens any stock – though it could age for decades.
Finish
Long, fresh and characterised by persistent fruitiness that transitions into mineral coolness. The sweetness fades elegantly whilst the acidity lingers.
Terroir & Origin
The Le Haut-Lieu comes from one of the three Grand Cru vineyard sites of Domaine Huet in Vouvray. The terroir of limestone and flint soils gives the Chenin Blanc its characteristic tension between fruit and minerality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Chenin Blanc in its purest form, cultivated biodynamically. The grapes are selectively harvested to achieve the perfect balance between ripeness and acidity – a prerequisite for great off-dry wines.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Excellent with potato pancakes with trout roe and crème fraîche, wild partridge pâté with cardamom and ginger or as a congenial companion to apricot strudel. The wine effortlessly bridges the gap between savoury and sweet dishes.
Special Characteristics
A wine that proves „demi-sec“ need not be a compromise, but rather represents an independent category of excellence. Great ageing potential with immediate drinking pleasure.
