Wine Description for Pouilly-Vinzelles AOC 2022 by La Soufrandière
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, intense straw yellow with brilliant clarity – a Chardonnay that already displays its presence in the glass.
- Nose
- Initially reserved, almost shy in its bouquet, this Pouilly-Vinzelles unfolds its facets with a little air: citrus and crisp pear dominate, accompanied by green apple, yellow plum and exotic carambola. Beneath this shimmers a warm, creamy pastry note, whilst chalky mineral accents and white flowers lend the wine its Burgundian elegance.
- Palate
- Here the true class reveals itself: silky, juicy and surprisingly sensual in texture. The ripe citric acidity merges with stone fruit and white peach into a harmonious whole. The acidity structure is pronounced, yet never intrusive – rather, it contributes to the smooth elegance. A fine tannin gives the wine backbone and structure.
- Finish
- Long and precise with persistent fruit. The subtle tannin accompanies through to the end, lending the finale remarkable length and tension.
- Terroir & Origin
- From two hectares at 230 metres altitude in the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation. The 40 to 55-year-old Chardonnay vines are rooted in clay-limestone soils from the Bajocian (Jurassic formation), which impart the wine’s mineral character and depth.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested at the end of August 2022. Whole-bunch pressing and spontaneous fermentation, followed by maturation in 80% stainless steel tank and 20% in Burgundian Pièces (228 litres). Complete malolactic fermentation. With just 36 mg/l total sulphur and a pH of 3.24, a wine that unites freshness and naturalness.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- The silkiness and fruit richness harmonise perfectly with butter chicken with fenugreek, gratinéed scallops with carambola mignonette or cauliflower tabbouleh with apples, nuts and coriander. Also an excellent choice with pan-fried monkfish or creamy goat’s cheese preparations.
- Special Features
- A Chardonnay that proves La Soufrandière maintains freshness and elegance even in warmer vintages. The minimal sulphuring and natural maturation allow the terroir to speak unadulterated – authentic Burgundy at a fair price.
