Wine description for La Grange AOP 2023 375ml from Luneau-Papin
Visual impression
In the glass, La Grange presents itself in a clear, medium straw yellow colour with silvery reflections, typical of a young Muscadet that reflects the clarity and mineral precision of the Loire soils.
Nose
The fragrance is restrained, almost meditative - a characteristic that characterises the best wines from Melon de Bourgogne. Precise notes of green apples and pears are accompanied by subtle hints of raisins. Underneath this is a fine hint of nutmeg which, together with lemon zest and apple peel, emphasises the cool, Atlantic-influenced origin of the wine. This aromatic restraint is not a weakness, but the hallmark of a Muscadet true to its terroir.
Palate
The true identity of this wine is revealed on the palate. The texture is simultaneously pithy and creamy - a tension that few wines can master. The acidity is not aggressive, but elegantly structured, while a savoury spiciness pervades the wine. Particularly noteworthy is the vibrant minerality, which is a direct reference to the slate and mica schist soil on which the vines planted in 1974 are rooted. This minerality gives the wine its special vitality and length without ever appearing heavy. La Grange has an impressive presence that remains agile and focussed right through to the finish - a sign of precision craftsmanship.
General information
This Muscadet comes from Le Landreau, the home village of Domaine Luneau-Papin, a winery known for its uncompromising approach to the Melon de Bourgogne grape. Careful hand-picking and the gentle pressing of whole grapes in pneumatic presses preserve the purity of expression. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in glass-lined concrete tanks and six months of maturation without racking before bottling emphasise the minimalist approach, which places the natural expressiveness of the terroir in the foreground. With its subtle residual sweetness (1 out of 5), the wine remains dry and precise.
Food pairing suggestions
La Grange calls for the cuisine of its Atlantic homeland. Excellent with Oysters, Mussels in white wine or a classic Plateau de Fruits de Mer. Also to Goat cheese from the Loire region or a simple Fish carpaccio with citrus and sea salt, this wine unfolds its full potential. Its precision and minerality make it the ideal companion for Seafood of all kinds.
