Tasting note from dated 15.10.2018, Copyright Christoph Raffelt

pale straw yellow

Slowly pressed in a historic tree press and created with minimalist intervention, this Grüner Veltliner smells of white flowers and red tart berries. Currants and barberry can be found here as well as mirabelles, lanolin and slightly unripe pears. A breath of oxidation and phenolic lies over the fruit.

On the palate, the wine is initially creamy and soft, almost fluffy, before the citrus acidity comes more and more to the fore. The wine is bright and demanding, riper than the cool 2014, but still has a lot of pressure and freshness. Lemon and bitter orange zest is picked up here as well as wet stone and some salt. The wine, which has now been aged for three years, rests harmoniously in itself, is balanced and, in addition to the clarity reminiscent of Chablis, also impresses with the restrained 11.5 % alcohol, which is now really rare in a Grüner Veltliner in the glass. It is a wine that is as unusual as it is impressive.

Food recommendations by Christoph Raffelt

  • Steamed redfish in fennel broth with caramelized fennel seeds
  • Salad of winter root vegetables with steamed mushrooms and fillets of flounder
  • Salad of artichokes and purslane with sherry vinegar
