Info
Calafata is not just a winery. In terms of wine, it should rather be called a cooperative. It is a social project and a catch basin for the socially disadvantaged or marginalized. Thus, one can also expect political statements here. On the back label as well as on the cork you can find "make wine not war" and "in ground we trust". Clear statements. Besides wine, they are also dedicated to the cultivation of vegetables and olives.
Gronda is a cuvée of Vermentino, Malvasia, Trebbiano and Moscato. The who is who of the white Tuscan vines. Vermentino was the first wine produced by this social cooperative with biodynamic farming.

Rich golden yellow, orange reflections
Nose
The nose has a warm character and has a calming effect on the mind. Citrus fruits like orange, tangerine and grapefruit literally jump at you. Both in the fresh stage and their candied zests. Yellow fruits like apricot, sharon fruit and mirabelle are also found in the nose. Sometimes as compote sometimes freshly sliced. A little dried herbs and hay ground the fruity notes. A spicy component of oregano and sage nestles in wonderfully. The balsamic notes of the spices escalate wonderfully into vegetal notes like artichoke and fennel.
Palate
The 2019 Gronda from Calafata is much cooler and clearer on the palate than one would expect after the intensely fragrant nose. It is light-footed with only 11%Vol. on the way. A present but not dominant acid structure noticeably cuts through the wine on the palate, making it more approachable. The aromas of the nose reveal themselves again, but seem lighter and brighter here overall. With its loud aromatics as well as the accompanying lightness and freshness, this is a wine for any occasion and any season. To the aperitif or to the Mediterranean kitchen.
