Info
This unique location is known far beyond the region and is often exemplary for the Kaiserstuhl. The Grosses Gewächse are produced from individual parcels, so that the site is classified as a VDP Erste Lage. The loess layer on the volcanic rock in the subsoil is the leading factor. The portfolio of sites ranges from cool, high-altitude sites to warm, flatter sites with a clear southern exposure.
All Pinot Noirs at Weingut Franz Keller are matured in barriques. For the Erste Lage Oberbergen Bassgeige, the proportion of new wood is low at 10-20%, but even in the GG range this proportion never exceeds 35%. The Pinot Noir matures in the barrels for 12 months.
Basically Barrique GGs - More new wood depending on the vintage between 25% and 35%
Only a small proportion of whole bunches in 2021 - 18 months in wood

Nose
Dark, opulent and warmly inviting. At the same time, it exudes a certain cool elegance. The fruit appears dark and perfectly ripe. Ripe strawberry, dark plum, mulberry and raspberry are emblematic. Morello cherry and sour cherry provide even darker and refreshing accents. Black pepper, marjoram and juniper add a pleasant spiciness. Cubeb pepper sets invigorating accents. Lightly roasted coffee also peeps around the corner. It is earthy and masculine with nuances of undergrowth and damp forest floor. Some moss and pine cones come in handy. Finally, a fine herbal spice brings sage and parsley into play.
Palate
The fruit is wonderfully balanced and juicy from the very first sip. Despite all the fruit intensity, which is wonderfully at peace with itself, the acidity structure provides a rich contrast. 2021 Bassgeige Pinot Noir is really dry on the palate with 0.5g residual sugar/litre, but the fruit manages to convey a mix of ripeness, fruit concentration and gripping acidity. Wonderful. Its astringency is unrivalled and does not allow the glass to lose its lift. Great drinking flow with multi-layered flavours. The flavours of the nose are similarly reproduced on the palate. It lives from its silky structure, length and finely chiselled acidity.
