Wine information
Although the vineyard is not far from Switzerland, the Walis is located in Baden, more precisely in the Markgräflerland, and more specifically near Efringen-Kirchen in Blansingen, very close to Hanspeter Ziereisen. This elevated site consists of Jura limestone and lies directly above an old limestone quarry. It faces south and offers a view of the Rhine. Depending on the vintage, the grapes were either partially destemmed or fermented as whole bunches. They were briefly crushed by foot in small wooden vats and fermented on the skins for around three weeks with moderate pigeage. The country wine was then pressed on an old basket press. The wine was drawn off via the broquereau using gravity pressure. The wine was matured exclusively in used wooden barrels, mainly in barriques and pièces. No yeasts, no enzymes, no fining and no filtration were used. Depending on the vintage, a maximum of 30 mg sulphur was added.
Color
Garnet red with clear mahogany-coloured brightening towards the rim.
Nose
The 2020 Walis shows fine graphite notes, smoke, spices and dried fruit. It is sweetish, subtle, charming and at the same time mineral and complex in flavour. A fresh, incredibly charming and profound flavour. You want to lose yourself in it and not emerge.
Palate
It is just as charming on the palate as it is on the nose. Lots of fresh acidity is paired with sweet fruit, fine tannins and earthy and smoky components. A Pinot that seduces, dances and is a joy to drink on its own. In combination with savoury and fruity cuisine, it reaches top form. Very good development potential!
Decant and enjoy slightly chilled from Burgundy glasses.
