Wine description for the Oberbergener Bassgeige Pinot Gris VDP Erste Lage 2022 from Franz Keller

Colour & appearance

Bright straw yellow with subtle orange nuances and light reflections - a Pinot Gris that visually reveals its origin from this privileged location.

Nose

A complex, multi-layered bouquet unfolds with impressive depth. Candied quince and juicy pear dominate at first, followed by Peach and a touch of Pineapple. The yeasty notes are reminiscent of warm brioche and covered apple pieaccompanied by fine spice nuances such as Cinnamon and Carnation. Floral accents from Jasmine and Orchid and domestic Garden herbs round off the aromatic spectrum.

Palate

This sophisticated Pinot Gris is confident and balanced on the palate. The fruit is present but never overpowering, supported by a delicate mellowness despite the dry flavour. The yeasty components of the nose continue harmoniously, while a fine bitter note provides tension and complexity. The finish convinces with a clean, salty finish of impressive length.

General information

Franz Keller's 2022 Pinot Gris from the Bassgeige vineyard epitomises the essence of this exceptional Oberbergen site. The Loess on volcanic rock with basalt components gives the wine its characteristic minerality. The skilful balance between cooler, high-lying and warmer, south-facing plots is reflected in the complexity. The ageing in large wooden barrels and partly in steel tanks preserves the clarity of the fruit while at the same time providing structure.

Food pairing suggestions

This multi-layered Pinot Gris harmonises perfectly with Ravioli with ricotta and spinach in sage butter, Creamed veal cutlets with dumplings or Yellow lentils with radicchio and lemon. The salty minerality and yeasty notes make it the ideal companion for creamy sauces and strong vegetable flavours.

Special features

A Pinot Gris of VDP Erste Lage quality that exemplifies the terroir characteristics of the Bassgeige. The combination of fruit intensity, yeasty complexity and mineral precision makes this wine an outstanding representative of its category.
