Wine Description for Eichberg Oberrotweil Spätburgunder GG 2021 by Franz Keller

Colour & Appearance
Darkly luminous cherry red with delicate violet reflections – a colour depth that promises concentration.
Nose
A fascinating kaleidoscope of aromas: initially dominated by dark berries such as blueberry, elderberry and black cherry, accompanied by preserved morello cherries. Then an impressive floral dimension unfolds with lilac, violet and pansy. The complexity deepens through vegetable notes of fennel and artichoke, ethereal spices such as coriander and caraway, as well as fine hints of roasted coffee, Darjeeling and chai tea.
Palate
Here the cool character of the 2021 vintage reveals itself in all its elegance. The wine fills the mouth with dense, expansive fruit, yet remains precise and taut. A fine, forceful stream strikes the palate – the fruit appears more delicate and brighter than the nose would suggest. Marked acidity pressure lends the wine compactness and tension. The floral aromatics blend beautifully with the ethereal spice. The texture is silky and enveloping, the coolness and elegance enormously invigorating.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site, planted in 1994 with Burgundian clone material, lies in the lower part of the Oberrotweil Eichberg with dominant south-facing exposure. The dark volcanic rock tephrite, formed by eruptions near the crater, characterises the distinctive character of this Spätburgunder.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), aged for 18 months in barrique with an unusually high proportion of 45% new oak for the estate. With moderate 12.5% alcohol, a prime example of finesse over power.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Excellent with Peking duck with sweet potato and pumpkin stir-fry, cabbage rolls with mushroom and walnut filling or beef tea essence with oxtail praline.
Special Features
A Großes Gewächs that masters the cool 2021 vintage with aplomb – elegant, precise and with enormous ageing potential.
