This wine is a late filling of the Fuders 1873, which was allowed to ferment for a particularly long time. The Riesling comes mainly from the core area of the Marienburg site, which is characterised by grey slate. The wine was fermented spontaneously in the foudre and matured on the lees.
medium straw yellow
The late filling of the Rieslings from the Grey Slate 2018 appears intense, penetrating, but restrained and fine, as has become very typical of Clemens Busch's style. A ripe, slightly sweet fruit of vineyard peaches, kumquats, Reineclauden and red apples combines with slate and some smoke as well as some macerated herbs.
On the palate, the Riesling is penetrating, deep and long, with a clear and precise structure. It is a wine that combines the fruit notes already mentioned in the bouquet, which always remain discreet, with a lot of herbal and above all rock spice, with yeast and with some tobacco and anise, which harmonises very well with the discreet phenolic. The grey slate comes through very well here, the Riesling is clear, dry, firm and grippy, purist and sparse in the base, but charming at the same time with its fruit and light creaminess. The long ageing in the 1873 barrel gives the wine an additional dimension. The warm vintage is very noticeable in this Riesling from the grey slate hardly recognisable, it remains so puristic. If you want it fuller and yellow-fruited and even spicier, choose the 2018 Riesling from the Blue Slate Barrel 76.
