Wine Description for Gimmeldinger Meerspinne Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2022 by Christmann

Colour & Appearance
Pale golden yellow with delicate green reflections – a visual promise of freshness and youthful energy.
Nose
Cool, precise, demanding. The 2022 Meerspinne does not reveal itself immediately, but requires air and patience. After decanting, a multi-layered aromatic profile unfolds of citrus, quince and apple skin, interwoven with orange zest. Beneath lies a compact, almost stony minerality that recalls wet limestone. With time, fine herbal notes emerge, a hint of ginger and coriander – the signature of a great terroir.
Palate
Elegant and refined, yet with surprising density. The wine glides across the tongue, tickling it with saline minerality and invigorating acidity. A fine bitter note – typical of the Meerspinne – lends it contour and tension. At a moderate 12% alcohol, it remains light-footed, never heavy, always inviting to drink. The balance between fruit, acidity and mineral backbone is exemplary.
Finish
Long, saline-fresh, with an echo of citrus peel and stone. The acidity persists without dominating – a sign of longevity.
Terroir & Origin
The Meerspinne – documented as „Mersbin“ as early as 1456 – is considered a top Gimmeldingen vineyard site. The south-east facing foothill benefits from extreme day-night fluctuations caused by nocturnal cold air currents from the Palatinate Forest. Subsoil: massive limestone, covered with eroded Buntsandstein gravel and calcareous loess. This combination shapes the wine’s mineral character.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Riesling, selectively hand-harvested in small crates. Spontaneous fermentation in large wooden vats – classical, purist vinification that gives terroir room to express itself.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This wine demands precise, saline partners: spider crab tartare with caviar, red mullet on fennel-orange vegetables or vegetarian sushi with nori seaweed and ginger. Spicy vegetable variations also harmonise beautifully.
Special Characteristics
A Grosses Gewächs that rewards patience. Definitely decant, do not serve too cold (10-12°C), enjoy in large glasses. Drinking well now, but with potential for at least a decade.
