purple with black core

Just 13 hectoliters per hectare could be harvested by Paul-Vincent Avril in 2013. This resulted in an extremely concentrated Châteauneuf, which needs air, a lot of air, to fully develop. And yet, from the first moment, it seems quite present. With the necessary oxygen, the 2013 becomes a giant, as it were, which offers its aromas of cherry liqueur, black cherries, blueberries and blackberries as well as the whole range of southern French herbs, pepper and ground stone lavishly and with much passion.

Juicy and concentrated, the wine also presents itself on the palate. Of course, the rich, nonchalant fruit, the herbal spiciness and the stoniness are also found here. However, there is also an impressive, almost Burgundian elegance, which one would hardly expect from such a powerhouse. But this is how they are, the wines of Paul-Vincent Avril classically vinified in old barrels, elegant and worthy of aging.

Food recommendations by Christoph Raffelt

  • Leg of hare in juniper-red wine broth with bacon and baked potatoes
  • Grilled and caramelized beets topped with Bleu des Causses or Roquefort cheese
  • Ox cheek in red wine jus with mashed potatoes and parsnips
