The outstanding grapes of this wine have been carefully selected from different vineyards in the Barolo territory. The vines are between ten and 45 years old. The soils vary, but the majority is calcareous marl with varying ratios of lime to clay.
After the grapes were carefully hand-picked on 4 October, they were completely destemmed and then moved to stainless steel vats for cold maceration. Alcoholic fermentation took place, accompanied by regular turning over of the must. When the marc cap was submerged towards the end, the post-fermentation process began. The wine was then in contact with the mash for four weeks. The malolactic fermentation took place in used barriques, followed by about 30 months of ageing in large wooden barrels. The wine was finally bottled unfiltered.
The colour resembles exquisite purple tones that lighten towards the rim. This hides expressive brick-red reflections.
This 2018 Barolo Castiglione from Vietti is a compelling charmer: floral notes of rose petals and violets blend harmoniously with sour cherries, bright red berries, rose hips and plums. An intense scent of incense, tar and liquorice permeates the air and radiates consuming passion. Meanwhile, hints of nougat and sultanas provide that certain something. You simply cannot escape this wine - you would love to taste it immediately.
The wine finds access thanks to its refreshing and striking presence on the tongue - once it has had a chance to breathe extensively. The acidity shows clearly and gives it an aristocratic coolness and freshness. At the same time, the tannins are ripe and perfectly match the sweet fruit. A decidedly subtle wine that gives the impression of floating. Timeless, meant for dreaming and meditation and perfect together with the exquisite cuisine of Italy!
For the impatient connoisseurs, it is advisable to decant the wine at least two hours before enjoying it. It should be enjoyed from a large glass and paired with carefully selected, rich dishes.
