Wine description for 16 Filari Nero d’Avola DOC Sicilia 2023 by Case Alte

Colour & Appearance
A dense, almost impenetrable violet-red, appearing deep black at its core – a visual statement of the concentration contained within this wine.
Nose
Here the Nero d’Avola reveals its most seductive side: blackberries and sloe dominate initially, accompanied by black cherries and noble dark chocolate. Smoky notes lend depth, whilst cassis undertones contribute an alluring sweetness. With air contact, a Mediterranean herbal spice unfolds from rosemary, thyme and wild mint, along with a surprisingly floral component of violets and roses – complex and multi-layered.
Palate
Powerful and gripping, this 16 Filari presents itself on the palate. The still youthful tannin recalls tar and dark tobacco, yet is wonderfully woven into the opulent, sweet-edged fruit. The mineral structure lends the wine grip and length, whilst the 14% alcohol is perfectly integrated, providing warmth without harshness.
Finish
Remarkably long with a refreshing quality one wouldn’t necessarily expect given this concentration. The fruit fades gradually, whilst mineral notes and fine spice linger.
Terroir & Origin
The 25-year-old vines are rooted in clay and sandy soils at a considerable 500 metres elevation – a vineyard site that provides freshness and elegance despite the Sicilian sun.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Hand-harvested Nero d’Avola, fermented in stainless steel at controlled 23°C with 10-12 days of skin contact. Subsequently 8 months maturation in oak and a further 6 months bottle age – a wine that has been given time to develop.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Made for the intense cuisine of Sicily: Pasta alla Norma, braised lamb with herbs, caponata, grilled beef or also spicy hard cheeses such as Pecorino Siciliano.
Special Characteristics
A fiery, characterful Sicilian with impressive structure and ageing potential – authentic, powerful and yet elegant.
