Wine Description for Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd Dry 2014 1500ml Magnum by Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Luminous golden yellow with amber-coloured reflections – a testament to ten years of maturation. In the glass, it displays remarkable clarity and brilliance, reflecting the biodynamic working methods of Nikolaihof.
Nose
The nose reveals a fascinating complexity of mature Riesling: ripe quince and candied lemon zest meld with notes of beeswax and white tea. Subtle hints of petrol – that classic Riesling maturation characteristic – mingle with flint and a fine honey note. The terroir imprint of the ancient bedrock is distinctly perceptible.
Palate
On the palate, the full splendour of a mature Wachau Riesling unfolds: taut, precise, with vibrant acidity that has lost nothing of its freshness despite its age. Stone fruit and ripe apple meet mineral salinity and an almost creamy texture. The 12.5% alcohol is perfectly integrated; the wine appears elegant and graceful despite its power. The magnum bottle has afforded the wine a particularly harmonious development.
Finish
Endlessly long, with vibrating minerality and a salty freshness that invites the next sip. The acidity carries far, leaving a cool, stony aftertaste with a hint of citrus zest and dried herbs.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Vom Stein in the Wachau embodies the mineral power of ancient bedrock soil. Nikolaihof has managed its vineyards according to biodynamic principles since 1971 – Austria’s first estate with Demeter certification.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling in its purest form, vinified as Smaragd – the highest quality level of the Wachau. The biodynamic maturation takes place without fining or filtration, which gives the wine its authentic expressiveness.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine for the refined table: excellent with roasted turbot, calf’s sweetbreads with morels, mature Comté or scallops in butter. Also an unconventional yet brilliant choice with Wiener Schnitzel.
Special Features
Archive Release 2024 – a deliberately reserved treasure from Nikolaihof’s wine cellar. The magnum bottle guarantees optimal maturation conditions and longevity. A wine with further development potential for the next 10-15 years.
