Rotter Veltliner

Roter Veltliner grape – Historical watercolour from Viala & Vermorel Ampélographie (1901)

Roter Veltliner – not a colour mutation of Grüner, but its own, very old variety. The reddish berry skin gives it its name, yet the wine is white and has a robust, earthy structure. Not the delicate type, but powerful, with pronounced acidity and often a certain rusticity.

Today it grows almost exclusively in Wagram, where Fritsch vinifies it consistently – partly classically in stainless steel tanks, partly in wooden barrels with extended skin contact. Loimer in Kamptal also shows what the variety can do when it’s not polished smooth. A grape variety with character that has no interest in pleasing.
