Godello

Godello grape – Historical watercolour from Viala & Vermorel Ampélographie (1901)

Also known as: Agudello (Portugal)

Godello is often referred to as the „Spanish Chardonnay“ – a comparison that diminishes the grape more than it deserves. Godello speaks its own language: waxy texture, pronounced minerality, notes of stone fruit and white flowers, underpinned by a freshness that lingers. The variety originates from Galicia, the verdant northwest of Spain, where Atlantic climate meets ancient slate soils.

All six Godello wines in the range come from Sangarida in D.O. Bierzo. The project was founded by Attis from Rias Baixas – an estate that understands Godello not as an experiment, but as Galician heritage. The wines are spontaneously fermented and aged on the lees, often in a combination of oak and acacia barrels. The result is white wines with substance, demonstrating that Godello is not a substitute for Chardonnay, but occupies its own distinct position in the spectrum of textured white wines.
