Wine description for Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad 2022 from Michael Andres
General information
With his Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad 2022, Michael Andres presents a characterful Palatinate Riesling that impressively reflects the typicality of the red sandstone terroir with a red clay background. The spontaneously fermented wine was deliberately vinified in stainless steel without malolactic fermentation and bottled with minimal sulphurisation after a long full lees ageing period.
Colour & appearance
The colour in the glass is a bright straw yellow with lively green reflections - classic for a youthful, precisely vinified Riesling.
Nose
The bouquet reveals a fascinating tension between yellow fruit (mirabelle plum, apricot) and cool, tart freshness. The Palatinate DNA is unmistakable: citrus fruit and pear meet Eucalyptus, Mint and Lemon grass. Floral notes of apple, almond and acacia blossom hover above, while a subtle hint of fennel and artichoke add complexity. The spicy component with clove, cinnamon and allspice gives the wine an unusual but harmonious dimension.
Palate
On the palate, the Riesling is uncompromisingly dry, pithy and with a striking structure. The red sandstone character of the Mittelhaardt is reflected in a playful minerality, while the acidity is still youthfully taut and meets a sparse but precise framework. The flavour consistently follows the nose impressions. Its fine astringency gives the wine character and promises good ageing potential. A Riesling with rough edges that does not deny its origins and is therefore fascinating.
Food pairing suggestions
The distinctive structure and cool astringency predestine this Riesling for aromatically complex dishes such as Fusilli with radicchio and lemon or Asparagus salad with tamarind and lime. Particularly exciting is the combination with Smoked eel with pumpernickel, scrambled eggs and chivesThe acidity of the wine contrasts perfectly with the fattiness of the eel.
Special features
An authentic representative of the new Palatinate Riesling generation: precisely vinified, unadorned in its expressiveness and with a clear reference to the terroir. The deliberate decision not to use malolactic fermentation gives the wine a taut structure that makes it an ideal accompaniment to food. A wine that is currently still showing its youthful restlessness, but will find great balance with a little bottle ageing.
