Location information
Gracefully, the Schoenenbourg hill, located north of Riquewihr, stretches along steep sun-drenched southern and south-eastern slopes. The vineyard climbs from 265 to 380 metres and spreads over 53.40 hectares. Beneath its vines lies a moisture-retaining soil of Keuper, marl, dolomite and gypsum, rich in humus. A mantle of finely sieved quaternary gravel, Vosges sandstone and shell limestone refines this earth structure, as does marl limestone.
Splendour of colour
The wine's radiant golden yellow is interwoven with soft silver reflections.
Fragrance
This 2016 vintage of the Schoenenbourg Riesling Grand Crus impresses with its compact yet full structure. At first, it still holds back its true complexity. But after a spirited decant, delicate aromas of apple, candied lemon, angelica, honey and wood smoke begin to unfold. With increasing aeration, exotic scents of mango and orange become noticeable and will continue to unfold and intensify in the future, as will the distinctive notes of flint, wood smoke and stone minerality.
Taste profile
On the palate, the wine presents an opulent richness and a juicy fruitiness, interspersed with mineral and salty components and a fine tannin structure. The mid-palate is gripping and spicy, followed by a sustained, intense finish. A wine of great depth and potential. Patient wine lovers will be rewarded if they allow it the time to fully display its impressive power and refinement.
Alternatives to food recommendations
As a perfect culinary accompaniment, this Riesling harmonises excellently with a pumpkin-chanterelle soup garnished with roasted almonds. Accompanied by seafood, it unfolds its full richness: grilled lobster, served with a pumpkin-ginger puree and dried fruit, pure harmony. A gently braised veal stew with avocado and lemon also brings out the best in this wine.
