Wine information
Olivier Humbrecht
As the southernmost point of the wine route in Alsace, the Grand Cru du Rangen attracts gourmets and wine enthusiasts. At a higher altitude than the majority of its Alsatian counterparts, nestled between 350 and 480 metres in a narrow, cool valley, the vineyard calibrates its own rules. Early flowers sprout later here, thanks to the cooler climate near the highest elevations of the Vosges. But the steep, south-facing slope uses the Thann Valley's cold climate to its advantage, allowing the grapes to ripen to a high degree towards the end of the season. What really makes the Rangen wines stand out is the unique volcanic soil, a fusion of compressed ash and minerals. It yields wines whose remarkable minerality and smoky quality fascinate the palate.

Vinification

In the 2021 harvest year, the wine reached perfect maturity with strong acidity and developed intense volcanic aromas that seemed hesitant at first but then blossomed. It was vinified dry.

Flavour profile
The smoky notes of this powerful wine require patience and time to fully develop. Give it space in a carafe and it opens up a bouquet of white peach, mango, rosemary and tart grapefruit zest. It captures the senses and never lets them go.

Flavours
The 2021 Riesling Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann is a powerful wine that floods the palate with inspiring freshness. A salty intensity, vibrant acidity and fine tannins are framed by an intense minerality. Despite its strength, the wine has an almost silky texture and a pleasantly moderate alcohol content of 12.5 vol%. This wine invites hours of exploration and gets better with time. With its magnificence and complexity, this is a wine that can be enjoyed today but is best left to mature in the cellar for a few more years. Prepare yourself for a fireworks display of the senses when you open it. It is easy to immerse yourself in the magic of this intense yet elegant wine!

If you want to enjoy it immediately, decant it over several hours and serve it in a large glass. A few days after opening, it becomes even more expressive.

Alternative food recommendations
