We turn our gaze to Hohen-Sülzen, a charming village resting in the cooling shade of the so-called Eisbachtal. Its geographical location allows it to benefit from strikingly cool nights, thanks to the cold streams that spring down from the heights of the Donnersberg massif. The daily thawing and cooling of temperatures is remarkable here and gives rise to a very special terroir.
The 2017 Riesling from Hohensülzen represents this terroir in an impressive way. A glance at the glass reveals a fascinating, luminous, intensely golden colouring that is enchanting in and of itself.
On the olfactory level, this Riesling unfolds a symphony-like complexity. One takes notes of ripe honeyed tones and dried apricots, of sweet pineapple and a variety of herbs. Let your nose explore and find bergamot, nettle and privet. A bouquet of spices - ginger, aniseed, saffron and cardamom - completes the bouquet, while a smoky minerality adds depth to all the other notes.
If you taste the wine, an amazing harmony of tangy yellow fruitiness, salty lemon, spicy sharpness and a remarkable grip unfolds. An institutional-grade Riesling that is perfect to enjoy right now and elevates to an even higher level with the right dish pairing.
Consider ravioli with a ricotta and lemon filling as an alternative to the saffron gnocchi with sun-dried tomatoes. Instead of scallops, one might consider salmon char with smoked paprika and wild rice. Likewise, a delicate monkfish in a crispy crust of almonds and cinnamon on a bed uit fruity fennel salad would be an exciting choice.
