Wine profile
Hidden behind the charm of Turckheim village, one finds the remarkable Grand Cru Brand, wrapped in a mosaic of small biotite granite hills. This terroir benefits from an optimal geographical position, catching a gentle breeze from the broad Val Müstair and enriching the south-southeast exposure. Thanks to the rapid warming of the granite, this microclimate provides ideal conditions for the vines to ripen early. Deeply rooted, the vines draw nutrients from the clay and minerals released by the decomposition of the granite. The low yields of these old vines, especially in the consistently vinified year of 2019, result in small, concentrated grapes.
Maturity
The unusually slow fermentation period in 2019 allowed this wine to mature into a bone dry drink after 12 months, which left us amazed.
Visual perception
The eye is rewarded with a bright golden yellow colour.
Aroma
In its early stages, this 2019 Riesling Brand may seem a little reserved, but with ample decanting time, it unfolds its true aroma. Wrapped in a fragrant floral concoction, apricot, candied lemon peel and hints of ginger and lemon balm join in. This richness is held by visible minerality, a tribute to the granite rock that raised it.
Taste
A real eruption on the palate with invigorating acidity and salty notes dragging the taut fruit along. Challenging in its youthful intensity and complexity, it will make the connoisseur ponder. For despite the complexity that appears early on, the wine has the potential to develop further. A premature tasting could therefore unnecessarily shorten the career of this remarkable Riesling.
If it is already enjoyed now, a longer decanting and a sufficiently large glass is recommended. Re-opening after a few days enhances the wine's expressiveness.
Food accompaniment suggestions
Try it as an accompaniment to smoked Gouda and grilled nectarines served on rocket. A dish of potato and parsley root pancakes with anchovy sauce and coriander seeds or spicy prawns on mango and basmati rice would also be a great match.
