85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 5% Viura & Malvasia from 25 to 40 year old vines. Cool pre-fermentation for 24 hours at four to six degrees Celsius. Fermentation in large open wood fermenters, ageing for 26 months in new barrique, of which 90 % French, 10% American oak.
Color
Deep black-red, almost colour-dense to the rim.
Nose
What a nose The 2011 Rioja Reserva from Remirez de Ganuza smells of dark blackberry, cassis, cassis liqueur, warm blueberry muffin and damson jam. Because of its youthfulness, the incisive use of wood is unmistakable, expressing itself in scents of charcoal, freshly brewed mocha and dark tobacco. Sweet spicy notes of cardamom and cinnamon beguile the nose as well as Mediterranean herbal notes of thyme, rosemary and dried allspice.
Palate
Even if the aging in the barrique is still clearly recognizable, it shows a juicy fruit fullness of dark berries and sweet cherries as well as chocolaty hints after sufficient aeration. Tannin and acidity give it structure and, for all its opulence, a refreshing touch. A wine for the barbecue season, for autumn cuisine with sweet and fruity hints and for storing!
