Wine Description for Pinot Noir Heimbourg 2020 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Colour & Appearance
Muted garnet red with bright reflections towards the rim – a classic expression of elegant Pinot Noir from cooler vineyard sites.
Nose
Initially still closed and mineral-earthy, the Heimbourg 2020 opens with air to reveal a fascinating aromatic profile. Dark cherries, plums and red berries unfold slowly, underpinned by an impressive minerality that clearly reflects the iron-rich Oligocene limestone terroir. A Pinot of great finesse and depth that rewards patience.
Palate
Here the full class of this exceptional wine reveals itself: elegant, juicy and of remarkable precision. The acidity is lively, the tannin youthful yet ripe – a balance reminiscent of great Burgundy benchmarks. The fruit feels fresh and invigorating, the wine possesses that irresistible drinking flow that characterises great Pinots. Earthy notes harmonise perfectly with the red fruit.
Finish
Persistent and mineral, with fine tannin structure and a freshness that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
A rarity from just 0.32 hectares in the Turckheim single vineyard site Heimbourg. The west-facing vines on red, iron-rich Oligocene limestone soil benefit from extreme planting density (10,000 stocks/ha) and tiny grapes growing close to the ground – conditions that create extraordinary concentration.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Hand-harvested Pinot Noir, destemmed by hand on wooden boards, gently fermented in open vats with minimal pigeage. Aged in used 228- and 350-litre barrels, bottled unfiltered and unfined – Olivier Humbrecht allows the terroir maximum expression.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Beef fillet with porcini mushrooms and rosemary, goose with preserved plums, but also beetroot and potato rösti – the wine loves dishes that combine earthy and fruity components.
Special Features
The only red wine from the renowned house of Zind-Humbrecht. Viral diseases keep yields minimal – a true collector’s wine with excellent ageing potential. Generous aeration recommended!
