Info
The Riesling 120 N.N. stands in contrast to its limited provenance from Odinstal. The vines are planted in the Rhine Valley on sandy and loamy soils. Everything was fermented in stainless steel, with only 5% whole bunches added—a stylistic device that Andreas Schumann frequently employs.
It boasts remarkably slender 9.5% vol. alcohol. A true lightweight. With less than 1g/l residual sugar and crisp 7.2 g/l acidity, these are attractive values for discerning wine enthusiasts. The cause lies in the enormous rainfall there in September 2022. A full 110l fell per m² at the end of September, so the grapes were completely waterlogged. The selection process demanded enormous effort, as all ripe grapes rotted away.
Filtered through cellulose in August and lightly sulphited before bottling.
Colour
Luminous lemon yellow with green reflections
Nose
Wild and impetuous at first impression. Approachable, yet somewhat shy at the same time. On the nose it wavers between unusual yellow and green aromas. Fennel pollen, a touch of ginger honey and candied ginger. Unripe papaya and freshly cut kiwi. Lemon, bergamot and kaffir lime provide a tart, refreshing component. Coriander and fennel seeds. A hint of fresh pea and artichoke lingers in the air. Nettle, lemon thyme, mint and lemon balm deliver a bracing herbal freshness.
Palate
And it retains precisely this freshness. Remarkably light-footed on the palate, yet with structure and gentle texture. The phenols contribute substantially to its success. Bitter compounds are crucial here and continually challenge the delicate fruit. The herbal freshness with all its cooling elements shapes the mouthfeel for minutes on end. Never like a boiled sweet, always more like a fresh herbal extract. It is so lean and racy that it leaves nothing to be desired. Extraordinary tension and precision, without lacking anything.
