Zehnthof Luckert Maustal Riesling Großes Gewächs 2015, Franconia
bright golden yellow
The 2015 Maustal Riesling initially shows herbs instead of fruit and appears so earthy, as if it had rather become a Silvaner. But then, after a short time, it throws off the disguise and presents its true nature - albeit still a bit shy. Yellow fruits, nectarines, yellow plums, apricots, plus summer meadow herbs, some mint and tarragon rise from the spice. And yet the Riesling always remains on the mysterious, smoky-dark, earthy side.
The palate then shows why the revived old site "Maustal" is worthy of a Großes Gewächs. The Riesling is deep and complex, spicy and dry, mouth-filling and concentrated, has grip and pressure. It is expansive, warm and full-bodied in the yellow fruit, but counters this with its raciness and freshness. The Maustaler Riesling is unagitated, calm and very skillfully made.
