Tasting note from from 26.01.2022, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

Just one year after taking over the family-owned winery "La Soufrandière", the Bret brothers started their second project "Bret Brothers" in 2001. With the aim of being able to offer a wide range of selected terroir wines from southern Burgundy and Beaujolais, they buy in grapes from friendly winegrowers with small microplots and as old vines as possible, who work according to the same strict quality guidelines as the brothers do in their own vineyards. The wines are prepared with the same passion and care as those of "La Soufrandiere" and are matured in their own cellar.

The plots for this wine are located in the village of Chardonnay on fertile and particularly calcareous soils. The 20-45 year old vines were planted at a density of 7500 vines on a westerly exposure at an altitude of 220 metres above sea level with a 20% slope. The grapes were hand harvested, spontaneously fermented and aged to 95% in tank and 5% in used wood. After malolactic fermentation, the wines are bottled unfined, unfiltered with an addition of 45mg SO2.

Color

Strong straw yellow, bright and clear.

Nose

The 2020 Mâcon Chardonnay from the Bret Brothers is very disciplined on the nose, with only the skin of the fruit, such as yellow pome fruit, and no nuts, and a delicate reduction hovers over everything, giving its reduced yet concise appearance the necessary funk. Reduced to the max, it is the blueprint of a Chardonnay made from Chardonnay in a contemporary interpretation.

Mouth

On the palate, it is no less contemporary and shines with sparse grip and sinewy, taut stature. With fleshy extract and reduced juice, it is structurally enormously focused and bundles its characteristics around the animatingly piquant, salty-sour acidic nerve that makes you want to refill your glass again and again. A wine with filigree vibration and rapid drinking flow.
