Info about the wine

Warm, wind-protected location between 310 and 345 m above sea level with southern and south-eastern exposure and different soils on diverse bedrock. In a confined space, old, crystalline rocks such as amphibolites, gneisses and mica schists alternate with much younger clay marls, sands and rare gravels deposited in the Paratethys sea about 16 million years ago.

Vinification info

Selective hand-picking into 20 kg crates at the beginning and middle of September, followed by whole-cluster pressing and spontaneous maceration for up to 24 hours in 1,250 and 2,500 litre oak barrels for four weeks at a maximum temperature of 24° C. Subsequent ageing for eleven months on the lees in oak barrels and a further nine months on the fine lees in steel tanks. Bottled unfiltered.

Color

Brilliant golden yellow.

Nose

The 2021 Grüner Veltliner Ried Käferberg 1.ÖTW clearly shows yellow fruit of apricot, orange, peach and many herbs, such as verbena, bergamot and fennel herb. The whole is accompanied by a smoky, peppery note and a clear mineral character. An extremely exciting, multi-faceted wine that makes you curious about the first sip.

Palate

Delicate and elegant light-coloured fruit such as pear and quince on the palate in combination with a cool note, playful acidity and animating spiciness. It appears slimmer and much more delicate than one might expect at 13.5 vol%, which is partly due to biodynamics and partly to the great art of winemaking. An invigorating, lively wine that can be enjoyed on its own and in combination with a cuisine characterised by herbs and vegetables.
